I’m on Google Plus!

7 02 2012

Since that G+ opened up for teenagers last week, I’ve been busy setting up my account. And now that it’s finished, I plan to use it to talk about small updates on my current projects, give spoilers for my new projects, and talk about more stuff that interests me, such as new sensors, other people’s work, and other tech news — basically, it’ll be stuff that’s not big enough to turn into a post, but that I still think you people should be able to see.

So, here’s a link to my profile:

PriNXT – Beginnigs

30 01 2012

It’s not quite finished, but I’m really excited about this next project, so I’ll tell you a little bit about it beforehand. So, what is this mysterious project I speak of?

Basically, I’m building a printer out of Mindstorms NXT (hence the name, “PriNXT”). I know it’s probably been done before, so I’ve purposely not gone looking for how other people did it – I wanted this to be more of a challenge. And, so far, a challenge it has been. I’m pretty sure that it’s the most complex build I’ve done yet, mainly because I had to fit three motors, a bunch of gears, three long wires, and support beams all into a restricted place that has to be able to move around freely; it also can’t rest on the paper it’s printing on, so all the weight had to be distributed to the sides. I’m not going to try to explain how I got it working until I shoot some nice closeups of it, so there will be a whole post dedicated to PriNXT’s hardware sometime later this week.

Now, here’s a list of things: (very descriptive name for a list, I know)

  • I’m going to try to write a basic text editing program in RobotC, so you can “type” something on one NXT and then transfer it to PriNXT to get it printed. That would probably use Bluetooth.
  • I’m considering to add functions for underlining text, making it bold, and even italicizing it.
  • The color scheme for PriNXT itself: White, light gray, dark gray and red.

In other news: I made a Technic camera jib for my iPhone, which, combined with the video editing software I got for Christmas, will make for some nice footage in the video for PriNXT.

A Slight Delay

30 12 2011

In my last post, I said I was going to release my newest creation before the end of the year, but I can’t. The reason being that I ordered a rechargeable battery for my other NXT, and that it turns out I got the wrong charger for it. The right one should be here in “1-2 days,” but, considering the weekend and the new year, that might take a bit longer.

So, if I’m really, really lucky, I’ll still be able to launch before school starts (read: before January 3rd), but otherwise it’ll probably be the weekend after. To leave on a more positive note, here is a little spoiler:

There is a webcam involved.

UPDATE: I checked the FedEx tracking system thing and the charger should be here Tuesday January the 3rd. I have everything (the post, the movie, etc.) finished, so I’ll launch it January 4th.

Merry Christmas!

26 12 2011

Merry christmas and a happy new year everyone!

I know I haven’t posted anything lately (sorry), but worry-you-not — I’m finishing something very exciting right now, and I think it’ll will be up and running by the end of the year.

In other news, you might’ve noticed that my blog’s url has changed to worldofmindstorms.com, instead of the old dimastero.wordpress.com. Why? Because ‘dimastero’ doesn’t relate to MindStorms NXT in any way, and because I think the url looks better this way. Again, worry-you-not: all the old links to specific posts and pages still work (thx WP!).

So, once again, merry christmas and a happy new year!

Taking a Break

17 06 2011

I’ve been trying to post to this blog at least once a week over the past 12 months, and I got from 3 views per month (cough July 2010 cough) up to 150 a day (OK I admit that doesn’t happen that often :P). But now, I’m moving from Germany to the US, and all of my stuff will be in a container for at least a month, if we’re lucky. On top of that, I’m going on holiday to Canada for a month right after that. Therefore, it’s likely I won’t post too much on this blog for the coming two months at the very least.

I’ll still try to do more text-based stuff and post about it, and I’ll try to be as active as I can on the forums I visit (RobotC and MINDboards), but it’s gonna be turned down a notch for some time. Once I’m ready to go again, though, I’ll probably overload this place with new stuff I’ve come up over the summer break (hopefully :)).

Since this is technically this blog’s one-year anniversary, I’d like to thank all of the people who helped me out with robots and programming, everybody who visits and/or links to this blog, and my family, for all of the support you guy’s have given me. You know who you are. Thank you.

New projects

30 04 2011

It’s been some time since I last worked on a big project. Right now, I’ve got one that’s almost done (hardware-wise), and another one in planning; both will hopefully be finished before May 30, so they can enter the MindBOARDS robotic arm contest. The first one, the Easter Egg Sorter (EES) , features a 4 DOF robotic arm with a conveyor belt sorting (surprise surprise) easter eggs. The post will be up early tomorrow, but here’s an image anyways.

The following image cannot be displayed: Front view of EES

The second one will be a bit different, and it’s going to be based on a real-life machine. More info on that one next week (probably on Monday), after some more experimentation.

Happy Easter!

25 04 2011

Once upon a time, an annoyed mindstormer was going through his easter eggs, looking for that very last green one, but couldn’t find it. Going to his computer, he found the solution: the MindBOARDS Robotic Arm competition. He knew what to do.

President Barack Obama signs NXTs

21 02 2011

From the NXT Step blog:

Three days ago, there was an entry on “The 1600 Report” blog by CNN that features Barrack Obama, President of the United States, visiting the Intel facilities in Hilsboro, Oregon, and learning from young science students there on their bio-medical LEGO® MINDSTORMS robots.

A Creative Take on the Apple iPad

7 02 2011

This is not mindstorms-related. I just finished this video promoting the Apple iPad for V Arts in school. I was planning to do some of the effects (the “iPad”‘s screen was cut out, everything you see is behind it) using mindstorms, but that didn’t work. Music (Rolling in the Deep) is by Adele. The video was inspired by the “creative take on Google Chrome”-video series by… Google Chrome. Enjoy

Thanks for watching!

A Huge Thanks to the LEGO Technical Service!

16 10 2010

I almost forgot to post this, but my replacement intelligent brick arrived today. Actually, I didn’t really expect a new one, as I didn’t have any kind of receipt left, and my NXT was over three years old. They even sent me the 2.0, while I had the 1.0. That is just GREAT service, so, to anyone from LEGO who reads this, THANK YOU.

Kind of a bad time to start up a blog…

23 07 2010

Hi there,

I’m not going to be posting anything for the next month. That’s mostly because I’ll be in Italy for the next couple of weeks, most of my latests projects have been breaking and need to be taken care of, and I need to buy some extra stuff to do all that. On top of that, my NXT is defect, so that’s probably going to take me another week or two. To sum up: this is kind of a bad time to start up my MindStorms blog, but at least I’ve got it done now, and can’t forget about it in the future.
